Welcome to the Woman’s Literary Club

Welcome to the Woman’s Literary Club of Holland!

Our 124th year is going to be quite exciting as we plan and begin events to celebrate our 125th Anniversary!

One of the longest-running organizations in Holland, the WLC began in 1897 as a small group of 15 women affiliated with the Bay View Reading Circle. Eager to enhance their knowledge of important topics, these women met on Monday afternoons to read and discuss the Bay View supplied curriculum on history, literature, and art. As membership grew, the informal Reading Circle organized under the leadership of member Anna Coatsworth Post and compiled a constitution and bylaws. Then, on June 7, 1898, with 27 local women members, the group officially became the Woman’s Literary Club of Holland.

This coming June, 2023, the Woman’s Literary Club of Holland will mark its 125th Anniversary as a dynamic local organization of women. The WLC continues to offer monthly programs hosting speakers selected to broaden knowledge of and appreciation for topics including music, art, literature, theatre, history, science, important societal issues, and more. The WLC continues to recognize the importance of contributing to a strong Holland community that supports the quality of life for each individual. Through its longstanding annual giving plan, the Club continues to support many local nonprofit organizations and to grant yearly academic scholarships.

The Woman’s Literary Club of Holland is a place of acceptance, community, and lifelong learning. We invite All Women to bring your interests, talents, and energy and join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our last 125 years …and help us set a course for our future!
